Continuation of Contour Channel (West Taieri) Resilience Upgrade project

Region:
Council:
Otago Regional Council

The Otago Regional Council seeks to upgrade a section of the existing West Taieri Contour Channel between Miller Road and Woodside Road to improve the resilience of the structure and provide ongoing flood protection for critical infrastructure, rural communities and farming activities located on the West Taieri Plain.

Benefits: Increased resilience and ongoing protection to infrastructure (including Dunedin International Airport, being 50% Crown owned), people and farming in the West Taieri flood plain, against the increasing frequency of flood events.  Reduced likelihood of catastrophic floodbank failure.

Adaptation: Adapting to the increasing frequency and intensity of rainfall events, ensuring that strategies and infrastructure are flexible and resilient in response to changing weather patterns.

Resilience: Strengthening resilience and safeguarding critical infrastructure by ensuring that stop banks are capable of withstanding heavy rainfall event.

Collaboration: Collaborating closely with the local community, including directly engaging with affected landowners, to ensure their input, concerns, and needs are addressed throughout the project. This project has been granted co-investment funding through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF).

Closing statement – This initiative ensures the safety and well-being of the local community, as well as the continued viability of farming in the region, safeguarding against the growing frequency of flood events. By mitigating the risk of catastrophic stop bank failure, the project strengthens the area's ability to withstand and recover from future challenges, fostering long-term security for both people and assets.
