Following the April 2018 flood, an Independent Review made comprehensive recommendations to improve flood risk management of the Ngongotahā Urban area.
The Ngongotahā Flood Mitigation Project was established as a joint Rotorua Lakes Council and Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council programme of action to implement the recommendations.
In conjunction with the Ngongotahā Community Reference Group, the project team has identified potential options to mitigate the flood risk.
The flood mitigation plan is to implement a combination of wider catchment works (tree removal and detention bunds), along with more localised floodway, stop banks, high flow bypasses and overflow channels. The wider catchment works that began in late 2020 are now complete.
The first stage of the civil works is the floodway. The remaining stages will follow consultation with impacted property owners, confirmation of the detailed design and resource consent approvals.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council received $3.775M in funding from Central Government’s Crown Infrastructure Funding.
